Be seen after dark
4 min readMost night-time close calls come down to one thing: the driver didn't see you in time. Good visibility is layered — light, reflection and position.
Run a steady white light up front and a red light at the rear, every ride after dusk — many places legally require it. A flashing rear light draws the eye, but pair it with a steady one so drivers can judge your distance.
Reflection works where batteries can't. Put reflective material low and on moving parts — ankles, pedals, wheel rims — because motion is what catches a driver's attention. A hi-vis layer over your jacket adds a large, predictable shape.
Position matters as much as gear. Ride a predictable line, claim your space at junctions, and make eye contact with drivers before you trust them to yield.
